How Can You Haul a Kayak Trailer?

Kayak owners have choices when it comes to hauling their gear around to recreational events, competitions, and other boating opportunities. They can try to cram the kayak into the vehicle, or use a neatly organized kayak trailer, and pull one boat, or multiple boats, along behind.

Some kayak owners might feel like they don't need a kayak trailer — that it's easier and simpler to strap a kayak on top of the vehicle, or place it inside a long cabin, for example, in the back of a station wagon. But there are some issues and problems that go along with this. From having adequate tie-downs to impairing sight distance, to taking up most of the free passenger space, putting kayaks into a conventional vehicle can be a headache.

So what types of vehicles can haul a kayak trailer?

Minivans

Most of the family minivans on the market right now have the capacity to tow a small kayak trailer. The Honda Odyssey, with 3500 pounds of towing capacity, has more than enough to haul models like Magneta-supplied models like the USSCT1 square stern canoe trailer or the UKCCT 33 Canoe kayak trailer. That means you can use your “dad-van” or “mom-van” to go boating, without having to invest in a more powerful vehicle like a truck.

Station Wagons

Some station wagons can also do pretty well and it comes to small trailer towing. Take a look at the trusty Subaru Outback — the 2017 has 2700 pounds of towing capacity, which is more than ample to tote along your kayak trailer in style.

SUVs and Crossovers

You can also look at a range of SUVs and crossovers that have enough capacity to tow a smaller trailer on the order of 1200 pounds or so. Late-model Subaru Foresters, Toyota Highlanders, and other crossover models have a towing capacity of 1500 pounds, which may be enough to get your boat on the road in a trailer.

Ask Magneta Trailer about a kayak trailer purchase, and how to get what’s right for your boating needs. Let us outfit you with the gear that you need to make kayaking a fun and easy experience from beginning to end.
